Description
Our odyssey will start in George Washington’s home town of Alexandria on the banks of the Potomac River and end in Reedville on the Chesapeake Bay. Our biking journey along the Potomac Heritage National Scenic Trail will take us to our nation’s monuments in Washington, Mount Vernon, Civil War battlefields in Fredericksburg, the birthplace of our 5th President James Monroe, the birthplace of George Washington, the home of the Lees in Virginia at Stratford Hall, and many other iconic Virginia historic and cultural landmarks. We’ll learn about the ecology of the river and the bay, and experience the rich diversity of wildlife as well. Our bike ride to Caledon State Park allows us to experience the largest population of bald eagles east of the Mississippi. Our visit to the Fishermen’s Museum in Reedville gives us a glimpse into a way of life on the water that is slowly disappearing. The biking is leisurely and the daily mileages allow ample time for hiking, river adventures, historic home tours, and wine tasting along the way. We think you’ll agree that the tranquil backroads of Virginia’s Northern Neck were made for bicycling!
