Virginia Odysseys

Denmark Odyssey

Tour is full.

The land of Vikings, fairytales, and castles beckons us to slow down and experience Danish "island life" at its best - by bike. Denmark is a nation of 406 islands and the islands of Funen, Tasinge, Langeland, and Aero provide quintessential Danish countryside, culture, and hospitality. Along the way we will visit a Viking ship museum, some of the best preserved castles in Europe, the birthplace of Hans Christian Andersen, quaint churches, inviting beaches, and vibrant Copenhagen. The Lonely Planet (2008) asks, “Is Denmark the best nation for bicycling in the world? Probably, thanks to its extensive network of cycle routes, terrain that is flat or merely undulating, and a culture completely committed to two wheels.” Come see for yourself why Denmark is a bicyclist’s dream!

Highlights

Day 1 - Thursday | Arrival in Nyborg and Warm-up Ride

Hotel Hesselet
Meet at 2:00 PM at the Hotel Hesselet to fit our bikes. A leisurely warm-up ride will take us by castles, beaches, and well-tended farms. We’ll learn about the wind-turbines harnessing the wind off the Great Belt.

Day 2 | Nyborg Layover Day - Bike loop to Kerteminde

Hotel Hesselet
Cycle through beech forests before traveling the coastal route winding through old fishing villages overlooking the sparkling sea. In Kerteminde explore its narrow, winding streets, and visit a brewery and the world-class Johannes Larsen Art Museum. In Ladby marvel at the remains of a Viking ship from 925 AD where a chieftain was laid to rest surrounded by weapons, jewelry, and clothing.

Day 3 | Nyborg to Troense

Hotel Troense
Egeskov Castle, one of Denmark’s best preserved castles, is our biking destination today. Along the way, bike by Neolithic burial grounds, windmills, and nature preserves. Troense, our home for the evening, overlooks Svendborg Sound and has an excellent Maritime Museum.

Day 4 | Troense to Aeroskobing

Pension Vestergade 44
Bike through Elvira Madigan’s Woods, and exhilarate in biking the separate bike path on the 4-mile bridge over Sio Sound. Then take to the seas on our ferry crossing to the Island of Aero. Once on Aero, time slows down and the undulating countryside and gentle sea breezes weave a magic spell as we glide to Aeroskobing.

Day 5 | Aero Layover Day

Pension Vestergade 44
Plenty of options today! Choose the distance you prefer as you leisurely explore Aero by bike. Lighthouses, churches, Neolithic burial tombs, and quiet roads beckon. Or enjoy a day off the bike and wander around the charming village of Aeroskobing before relaxing on the locals’ favorite beach.

Day 6 | Aeroskobing to Steensgaard

Steensgaard Herregardspension
Bike along the Aero coast before taking the ferry to Faaborg. Take a walking Tour of Faaborg, visit the round church at Horne, and relax with a Carlsberg at our manor home for the next two days.

Day 7 | Steensgaard Layover Day

Steensgaard Herregardspension
A local naturalist will take us on a hike in the Svanninge Bakker woods today. We’ll conquer the highest peak on Funen at 410’ above sea level. Biking options through the Svanninge Bakker are available.

Day 8 | Steensgaard to Odense

Grand Hotel Odense
Bike the “gently rolling” countryside of the Funen Alps seeing another aspect of the Danish countryside. Bike along the Odense River enroute to the home of Hans Christian Andersen.

Day 9 | Odense to Copenhagen by Train

Explore Odense in the morning before taking the late afternoon train to Copenhagen.

Accommodations

Hotel Hesselet | Nyborg

The Hotel Hesselet is elegant, but unpretentious. Peace and tranquility come easily as a result of its magnificent setting in a beech forest looking out on the waters of the Great Belt. It is the perfect place to unwind after a long journey across the Atlantic Ocean. It has a pool, sauna, Jacuzzi, and massage is available. We will eat well as only the freshest ingredients from local farms are used in its gourmet kitchen. Our after dinner walks through the forest and along the beach will help us fall asleep as we listen to the waves lapping against the shore.

Hotel Troense | Troense

From its perch on a hill overlooking the harbor, the Hotel Troense commands an impressive view of Svendborg Sund. Its cozy rooms and superb restaurant are a perfect ending to a great day of biking.

Pension Vestergade 44 | Aeroskobing

Situated in the heart of Aeroskobing, Pension Vestergade 44 is a large patrician house with delightful romantic rooms, a beautiful garden, and a warm welcome. Susanna, our hostess, will immediately make you feel like you are in your home away from home! The private garden offers a delightful respite to read, enjoy a drink, and reflect on incredible Aeroskobing. Rick Steves makes Pension Vestergade 44 one of his regular stops on the island of Aero. Some shared baths.

Steensgaard Herregardspension | Millinge

This manor dating back to the 14th century retains its historical atmosphere, but today we will be pampered with all of the modern conveniences. It is surrounded by 24 acres of beautiful parkland, a lake, and a game reserve. Understated elegance and overflowing charm are apparent the first moment you enter the grounds and see the wooden half-timbering on the deep-red brickwork of the hotel’s façade. The kitchen specializes in traditional old manor cooking with an imaginative flair.

Grand Hotel | Odense

After a thorough renovation, Odense’s most unique hotel has been redesigned with loving attention to historical detail. Its central location on a quiet street allows both easy exploration of historic Odense and an easy walk to the train station where we’ll depart for Copenhagen at the end of the bike tour.
